  • Tipsy Oxcart plays electric, sweaty, bumpin' Balkan music, channeling the spirit of 36 hour weddings to keep the crowds dancing until the sun comes up. Serving up originals and fresh, upbeat arrangements of urban dance tunes, the band deviously infuses the sounds of South-Eastern Europe with elements of jazz, funk, and more. Dig naughty violin solos, atomic accordion grooves, freak-me-out clarinet, and the baddest rhythm section this side of the Mediterranean. A party with Tipsy Oxcart is guaranteed to shake the dance floor all night long!

This performances celebrates Najara, the second studio album from The Epichorus, weavers of Middle-Eastern and Indian roots music. The album was recorded over two years, from Woodstock to Jerusalem, with over twenty musicians. The core Arabic ensemble (Oud, Violin, Qanun, Nay) is joined by upright bass and a tapestry of percussion, with occasional appearances from Accordion, Electric Keyboards, Kora, Hammered Dulcimer and Men’s Choir.

The sonic profile harkens to ancient fireside folk ensembles and the Egyptian orchestras of the 60’s, all of it creating a lush bed for the masterful vocal work of Indian classicist Priya Darshini. The album celebrates Israel Najara, a 16th century Kabbalist and poet who composed religious poetry to secular songs, elevating tavern songs to sacred status. His lyrics remain, though his melodies have been lost. In Najara, the Epichorus resurrects these sounds in the the musical style the poet cherished – tarabmusic, Arabic music of longing and ecstasy.

The PLUSH NOCTURNE Series, founded and curated by Avery Leigh's Night Palace, is an intimate and magical series of performances, with a distinct focus on women and non-binary performers. The series aims to shift our collective attention and resources to folks historically least centered in artistic spaces. PLUSH NOCTURNE performances range from classical chamber ensembles to interdisciplinary performance art; the series presents a colorful array of genres and mediums coalescing to create vibrant, cohesive, and shimmering evenings of art.

The Pleiades Project presents modern, feminist settings for opera-centric works; we create new performance opportunities for female artists who wish to express the strength, unique vision, and individuality of their art. Founded in 2015, The Pleiades Project was inspired by hundreds of dedicated female artists that are gifted, creative, and true examples of what it means to bring art and beauty into the world. The Pleaides Project creates a space that is dedicated to those artists, as well as a space that can bring the art that we are excited about to new audiences. As artists working in a digital world, we are passionate about bringing our art form to a wide and diverse audience. Our first short film, Così was released in 2016, and the second film, Ophélie will be released at the end of 2017. (www.thepleiadesproject.com)

String Theories 2: Solo – A World Premiere by W4 New Music Collective

    Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 8pmRoulette [ Map ]
Headlining our third annual String Theories Festival is our world premiere performance of Solo, commissioned by the SOB and written by W4 New Music Collective. Whether by choice or circumstance, there are times that we walk the road alone. Acknowledging these moments in their own lives, composers Matt Frey, Tim Hansen, and Molly Herron have collaboratively created Solo, a multi-movement instrumental work for The String Orchestra of Brooklyn. A rotating cast of soloists from every section of the orchestra highlight movements expressing different aspects of solitude. Each composer makes a personal connection with a poet from the past to inspire their work: Sara Teasdale, Hafez, and Rainer Maria Rilke, poets who have written extensively on self-truth and individuality.
